Vision Loss

Many health conditions, illnesses, and injuries can lead to sudden vision loss.

Why Do I Have a Sudden Vision Loss?

Many health conditions, illnesses, and injuries can lead to sudden vision loss. For example, if you have a retinal tear or retinal detachment, this can cause you to suddenly experience reduced vision. Other conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, can cause you to lose your vision gradually. If you were involved in an auto accident or had a sports injury, this can also cause you to have declined vision.

When Should Loss of Vision be Considered an Emergency?

There are several reasons why your vision loss is an emergency situation. Most specifically if you experience it along with severe eye pain, double vision, floaters, or flashes in the eye this is a warning sign of something serious. You should see an eye care specialist immediately. Also, if you experience physical conditions at the same time as your loss of vision this could indicate a far more threatening situation. For example, if you have a loss of vision along with dizziness, numbness on one side of your body, severe headaches, nausea, or trouble talking, then you could very well be suffering from a very serious medical condition, such as a stroke or brain tumor.
